Monthly News and Events – June 2024

Event
03.06.2024.

With the heat, we are already looking forward to the month of June, which still presents great opportunities to attend AppLV events until Midsummer. You’ll have a chance to cool off and catch your breath at our monthly Happy Hour, which this time will cross the Daugava – taking place in Āgenskalns Market. One of the topics of discussion may be the new initiative launched by AppLV to promote diaspora investment in Latvian companies (more on this below). We would like to remind our members that there are still some places left for the trip to Ruhnu Island in September – for more information, visit our Members Only channel. See you around!

P.S. On June 6th we celebrate 7 years since AppLV’s founding – much has been achieved, and thank you all for being part of it! We look forward to celebrating it with you at Happy Hour!

NEWS

We are thrilled to announce a new initiative to boost investment in Latvian businesses by leveraging the capital of our compatriots living abroad. On May 21st, we presented our program concept to the Parliament’s Business Development Subcommittee.

Key Highlights of the Program:

Objective: To facilitate diaspora investment in Latvian enterprises.

Eight-Step Plan: A comprehensive strategy to channel savings into strategic sectors such as ICT, biotechnology, and defense.

Benefits: Strengthening ties with Latvia and enhancing the probability of remigrants returning home.

Support: Potential incentives like investment guarantees, capital gains tax relief, and co-financing by the state (up for discussion).

Our vice-chair of the Board, Miks Muižarājs, emphasized the importance of maintaining connections with Latvia and how this program can serve as a bridge for diasporans to invest in and potentially return to their homeland.

Next Steps:

We look forward to collaborating with the Ministry of Economics, “Altum,” and diaspora representatives to create a draft proposal by October.

We thank the Parliamentaries and, especially, Chairman of the Subcommittee Ervins Labanovskis for chance to present. Let’s build a prosperous future for Latvia!
