On the 3rd of January, at the first meeting of the year, the Ar pasaules pieredzi Latvij\u0101 Board elected Mara McLaughlin-Taylor as Chair for 2025.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“I am delighted to take on this responsibility, to represent the organization and to continue AppLV’s good work with the new Board and our inspiring members. The Board is working on a number of impressive and important projects, which we look forward to sharing with you soon.”<\/span><\/p>\n

Born in New York to an exiled Latvian mother and an American father, Mara has always had a foot in two cultures, being actively involved in both the Minneapolis and New York Latvian communities. She holds a BA in Psychology and Sociology from Columbia University and an MA in Social Work from the City University of New York (CUNY). She has spent most of her career working in various NGOs and leading community initiatives.<\/span><\/p>\n

She moved to Riga with her husband in 2019. Shortly after, isolated in her apartment during COVID, Mara used her training as a social worker and started recording conversations with both Latvians and foreigners about the importance of culture and belonging, which she published under the title “Saprotu”.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

M\u0101ra joined the organization and the Board in 2022. “I remember how hard I searched for ‘my community’ – like-minded people who were not only talkers, but also doers. And here I found this amazing group of people who shared their stories, valuable knowledge and desire to leave the world better than they found it. Every time I attend an AppLV event, I leave feeling energized.” So far, Mara has been involved in the Society’s communications, by creating monthly emails, and in events – most notably working on the AppLV Remigrant Integration Project funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs last year.<\/span><\/p>\n

Outside of AppLV, she teaches English at Riga Technical University, government institutions and private companies.
